Representation to Abstraction

Learn how to look at anything abstractly and create a composition. Working from unconventional still-lifes, learn the dynamics of composition in whatever medium preferred. Critical analysis of strengths and weaknesses, with class exercises on negative/positive space, mark making, spatial tension, making color travel, and unity of composition. Media will vary from week to week.

Materials to bring to class:

Pad of newsprint paper 18 x 24 inches

Soft vine charcoal 1 soft charcoal

Pencil

1 eraser

Acrylic paints: if you don't already have paints, just buy small bottles (50 cents each) at walmart. black, white, purple, yellow, red, green, blue orange

Inexpensive brushes - small, medium

Medium-large pad of white paper, approx. 16 x 20 inches - something inexpensive

Small water container

White rain unscented hair spray ( to use as charcoal fixative)
